Overview
SNAP-B suggests explosive anger may be affecting Angela’s learning.
Interventions selected to help Angela
The aim should be to increase desired behaviours through teaching and encouragement, rather than trying to
decrease behaviours through punishments and disapproval. It is easier to teach and encourage new skills than to
remove existing ones.
SNAP-B pro昀椀les:
It is essential that the following interventions are incorporated into a caring and accepting relationship and that any
intervention is modified depending on Angela’s individual needs and her level of social, cognitive and emotional
understanding.
Managing anger: the four-step model
Here is a tried and tested programme for anger management.
First, it is necessary to understand the four-step model of the many causes of anger:
•
Step 1: A trigger (for example, being pushed in the playground)
•
Step 2: The trigger is thought of as a personal threat
•
Step 3: This causes anger arousal (stress may be a better term)
•
Step 4: And results in retaliation – what they do
The solution is to break this sequence using the four phases below.
Phase 1: Identifying triggers to anger
One of the first ways for Angela to control her anger is to recognise the triggers in school that make her angry.
Ask Angela to choose three triggers that make her angry. Then rank them, using a scale of 1 (most angry), 2 (less
angry) and 3 (least angry). Triggers might include things like:
•
pressure to get better grades
•
losing or failing at a sport
