Strategies to support EAL learners
Created by experts in teaching EAL and multilingual
learners and designed to be integrated into the
curriculum, this course demonstrates how educators
might use BICS (Basic Interpersonal Skills), CALP and
(Cognitive Academic Language Pro昀椀ciency).
This course builds a deep understanding of oracy
– what it is, why it matters, and how it supports
language development and academic success.
Aimed at helping mainstream educators to support
EAL learners, this course aims to develop both
their general and subject-speci昀椀c oracy, providing
educators with practical strategies to develop
learners’ speaking skills across the curriculum.
Using vocabulary tiers to develop learners’
pro昀椀ciency in social and academic language
and help them to identify commonly used and
specialised vocabulary, this course supports
mainstream educators in creating inclusive
classrooms where EAL learners can actively
participate and thrive.
Course outcome: Educators will develop their
con昀椀dence in supporting EAL learners and delivering
curriculum-integrated solutions, leading to the
improved inclusion of learners with EAL in the wider
school community.
This course addresses common challenges, offers
real-life scenarios and solutions, and provides
sample activities for a range of subjects including
Language Arts, Maths, Science, History, and more. It
also covers effective error correction, feedback, and
assessment methods.
Course outcome: Educators will improve their
understanding of oracy and gain tools to embed
oracy meaningfully into their own classroom
practice, boosting learners’ con昀椀dence and
classroom communication.
