Scaffolding for success:
Strategies to support EAL learners
Building vocabulary:
Ideal for educators aiming to make learning
accessible, equitable and ambitious for EAL pupils,
this course explores how scaffolding can enhance
EAL learners’ engagement, language development
and independence in mainstream settings.
This course supports educators in developing a
deeper understanding of how to build learners’
vocabulary effectively, exploring why explicit
vocabulary instruction is essential and unpacking
what it means to truly ‘know’ a word. Educators will
explore vocabulary tiers, identify higher-tier words
relevant to their subject areas, and receive practical
strategies for teaching new vocabulary.
This course will take educators through the theory
behind scaffolding, exploring the zone between
what a learner can do alone and with assistance
and the gradual transfer of responsibility from
educators to learners. Through adaptive quizzes,
re昀氀ection points and interactive tasks, educators
will explore verbal, visual, procedural and
collaborative scaffolding strategies and learn how
to embed these into lesson planning and delivery.
Course outcome: Educators will be equipped to
identify where scaffolding is needed, select the
right approach for each learner, and phase support
appropriately to build independence.
Strategies to support EAL learners

and knowledge of words, covering etymology,
morphology and collocation, with a focus on
interdisciplinary links and an emphasis on the
importance of regular review for improved learner
outcomes across subject areas.
Course outcome: Educators will receive
comprehensive research-informed approaches
to strengthen their own knowledge of vocabulary
instruction and use it to improve learner outcomes.
