Are any of your books fully
decodable?
Can I use books from other
schemes with Reading Planet?
All Reading Planet Rocket Phonics,
Galaxy and Comet Street Kids books have
been created using the same phonics
criteria based on the Letters and Sounds
progression and phases. Rocket Phonics
books are fully decodable. Comet Street
Kids, Galaxy and 24 Astro books are highly
decodable which means they contain a
limited number of above-level words to
provide reading richness and to support
the broader curriculum. All these additional
words are clearly listed on the inside front
cover of each book.
Of course! Reading Planet is a whole-school
scheme with almost 800 books. So, you
could choose to use it as your only reading
scheme. But we understand that some
schools have a range of different reading
resources.
How are Reading Planet books
levelled?
All Reading Planet books have been
carefully levelled by literacy and phonics
experts according to accepted bookbanding criteria as well as age-related
expectations. Every strand of the series
is built on the same progression so you
can use them in parallel. The books and
teaching resources have been carefully
designed to provide children with practice
in the full range of skills required to meet
and exceed the expected standards so that
they become fluent, confident readers by
age 11.

What is your book banding
based on?
Reading Planet books are colour-levelled
in accordance with widely accepted
book banding guidelines. At Pink A, the
text consists of a single simple sentence
per double-page spread; at Pink B, this
increases to one simple sentence per
page; at Red A, two simple sentences are
permitted; at Red B, the sentences can
begin to break over onto a second line, etc.
As children progress through the colour
bands, they will encounter progressively
longer texts with increasing complexity
in terms of vocabulary, language and
concepts.
Do any of your books have
Accelerated Reader quizzes?
Every book in the Comet Street Kids strand
is levelled and quizzed for Accelerated
Reader from Renaissance Learning. Many
of the Cosmos books are also levelled and
quizzed and more books from Reading
Planet will be added in the future. Your
local consultant can provide further details.
Please note that all levelling and quizzing
is carried out by Renaissance Learning and
not Hodder Education.
