First Steps for ages 3-4
Create a 昀椀rm foundation for literacy with a fun introductory phonics programme
based on Phases 1–2 of Letters and Sounds ⸀
3 Ensure learners develop the skills they need to start on their reading journey, with a
strong focus on oral communication and phonemic awareness
3 Introduce letter-sounds in the order of natural speech development, and expand
vocabulary using the 昀氀ashcards and immersive Big Book stories
3 Build con昀椀dence and enjoyment in learning through much-loved nursery rhymes, fun
ditties, and child-centred games and activities
3 Embed letter-sound recognition using the accessible Activity Booklets that also develop
昀椀ne motor skills, mark-making and emergent handwriting
3 Encourage children to navigate a book and provide practice of early blending using
vibrant reading books at Lilac and Lilac+ bands
One letter-sound is introduced each week ⸀
The Teaching and Learning Cycle is followed
throughout the week to allow for 昀氀exibility with
young learners ⸀
