CHanging THE sTORY
Changing the Story
The Changing the Story Reading Programme was developed by
the National Literacy Trust in partnership with Hachette UK ⸀ Between
2021 and 2024, the National Literacy Trust and Hachette Learning delivered
the programme in schools around the UK ⸀
Created to support struggling readers in disadvantaged primary schools,
Changing the Story has proved the positive impact Reading Planet can have
on reading attainment and enjoyment ⸀
In each participating school, selected groups of learners used our books
and eBooks for regular guided and independent reading sessions ⸀
Key 昀椀ndings 2021-2024:
Data from PiRA* tests indicated signi昀椀cant improvement in
pupils’ reading ability over the course of the Changing the Story
programme ⸀ Before taking part in the programme, on average,
pupils’ standardised score was 86 ⸀6 ⸀ After taking part, this had
increased to 95 ⸀0% for these pupils ⸀
The percentage of pupils who were below the national average
in their reading decreased from half (50 ⸀7%) at the start of the
programme to 1 in 4 (27%) at the end ⸀
The percentage of pupils who said they enjoyed reading ‘very
much’, increased from 25 ⸀5% before taking part to 39 ⸀0% after
taking part ⸀
