First Steps Teaching and Learning Cycle
In Rocket Phonics First Steps, one letter sound is introduced each week. The focus is on learners being
able to say and hear the sound. The Teaching and Learning Cycle is followed throughout the week to
allow for flexibility with young learners.
A typical week:
Day 1
Revisit and review the
previous letter-sound and
vocabulary.
Day 5
Enrich learning through
Lilac–Lilac+ band reading books.
Day 2
Teach the new letter-sound
and vocabulary using the
Big Book story.
Day 4
Apply learning with
Activity Booklets.
Day 3
Practise with flashcards,
nursery rhymes and
phonics ditties.
In Rocket Phonics First Steps there is no requirement
to teach all 36 letter-sounds. The programme is
designed as a flexible resource that you can adapt to
suit your nursery setting.
